What’s the Point of a Boss?

The image shows a white sign with a question mark being held by a person covering their face. This is a representation of the articles title "what's the point of a boss?"

Barbara Corcoran, well known entrepreneur-realtor, Shark Tank investor, and the queen of grit, made a statement recently that really stuck with me:

“My ‘cardinal rule’ is that I work for you, you don’t work for me.” (Quote) in “How to Be a Great Boss; Show Daily Appreciation” video blog.

Simple. Powerful. It made me pause.

Her words reminded me of the leadership model we built at Executive Advantage. It’s the foundation we use to train managers at all levels, especially senior leaders. And at the heart of it is this idea: Leadership is bringing out the best in those around you to achieve a common goal.

That’s it. Not complicated. But it takes intentional action. It’s not about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about creating space for others to shine. It’s about listening, guiding, and sometimes getting out of the way. When leaders do that well, teams thrive. And when teams thrive, great things happen.

The image shows a corkboard background with colorful stick notes and a page saying "call to action"

Here are a few closing options you can choose from or mix and match:

Option 1: Invite Reflection

If you’re a leader—or want to be one—take a moment today to ask yourself: Am I helping others be their best?  That’s where real leadership begins.

Option 2: Promote Your Leadership Training

Want to learn how to lead this way? Our Executive Advantage leadership model is designed to help managers at every level grow into leaders who bring out the best in others. Reach out to explore our training options by filling out the contact form at the bottom of the page.

Option 3: Encourage Engagement

We’d love to hear how you define great leadership. Share your thoughts or stories with us—let’s keep the conversation going.

Option 4: Connect to Your Mission

At Executive Advantage, we believe leadership isn’t a title—it’s a responsibility. If you’re ready to lead with purpose, we’re here to help.

How are you bringing out the best in your employees?
